WAKE UP, JOHN!

It has been approximately 1 month and 5 days since Halo 4 was released worldwide, giving us ample time to look back on the experience so far and give it a proper review. Halo 4 marks 343 Industries’ first entry into the Halo franchise, the torch passing from Bungie after they left to work on the long-awaited Destiny. Taking the reins of a franchise with such a renowned legacy proved to be a monumental task for 343 Industries, so let’s delve into the first instalment of 343’s Reclaimer Trilogy which marks the triumphant return of the Master Chief and his AI companion Cortana.

Halo 4 Soundtrack – Impressions

FIVE YEARS, FIVE LONG YEARS…

That ominous date, November 6th 2012, draws ever closer. We all know what it will bring, the return of the Master Chief and his trusty AI Cortana in Halo 4 along with a completely new campaign experience picking up right where Halo 3 left off. It’s a time of great anticipation and excitement for the Halo community, the culmination of half-a-decade’s worth of fiction through games, comics, novels, anime and even a live action series – to put it in Layman’s terms, it’s a damn good time to be a Halo fan!

Spreading the Good Word

In recent weeks and months, the Halo community has both bemoaned and praised the transfer of all things Halo from Bungie to 343i, with fans announcing their collective displeasure in the form of flaming, troll-driven outbursts, and others by praising the move and embracing the future. In fact, Hedgemony over at HBO told a very personal story on the subject of the future of Halo and I urge you to go and read it. (http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=1134017)

And it’s time I did the same.

Halo 2 and its Relation to Halo 4

About a year ago, I wrote an article on Halo 2 and its importance to the series. And it proved to be very popular. Even now, the vast majority of visitors to the site turn their attention to the second instalment of the Halo franchise. In fact, on regular days, a good sixty percent of visitors head straight for that very article. And it got me thinking. With the recent release of Anniversary, should 343i have a go at Halo 2? Or will they inject some of that bravery and magic into Halo 4?

The Failings of Halo Wars

Welcome to Harvest!

Back in 2009 we were introduced to another Halo game, but this iteration of the franchise was very different to the trilogy or anything else that would later follow. Ensemble Studios, the company that brought us Age of Empires had done what they do best and produced a another great Real Time Strategy, this time in the guise of Halo. Halo Wars centred on the aftermath of the fight for Harvest where a Covenant presence was still causing problems for the UNSC. But there were other concerns as well and not necessarily with the Covenant.

Was There a Better Way to Fight the Covenant?

As an ex-infantry soldier, I’ve always considered the actions of the UNSC to be a little short-sighted. Sure, they were fighting against a technologically superior enemy and there were isolated victories but nothing substantial. The Covenant war machine simply carried on and eventually rolled over every defensive position and every colony. Our fleets were ineffective, our weapons the same and our tactics one-sided and predictable. So how did the UNSC expect to turn things around? How did they expect to win?
